The unfit shoes problem

Women worldwide are forced to navigate systems designed for someone else, from safety equipment to business cultures that exclude rather than include.

Design failures

Safety equipment, furniture, and products designed using male body measurements from the 1960s, creating gaps in safety and comfort for women across industries.

Cultural exclusion

Business cultures operating as "boys' clubs" with networking styles and assumptions that systematically exclude women from opportunities and advancement.

Economic penalties

Economic systems that penalize women for life stages, preferences, and approaches, creating structural barriers to financial success and independence.

Safety gaps

Physical environments with inadequate lighting, security, and emergency systems that don't account for women's specific safety needs and concerns.

From unfit shoes to building our own game

"I realized that no matter how hard I worked, I was fighting against a system that wasn't designed for my success. So I decided to build a new one."

It started in a safety training session where the equipment didn't fit. As a first-generation Chinese immigrant pursuing my PhD in mechanical engineering, I was used to being one of the few women in the room. But that day, struggling with a safety harness designed for someone else's body, everything clicked.

The "hardware" problems were everywhere: lab benches at wrong heights, safety equipment that gaped dangerously, medications tested primarily on men. But the "software" challenges cut deeper - networking events that felt like boys' clubs, unspoken rules that penalized women for existing.

Rather than continue exhausting myself trying to succeed in an unfair system, I made a radical decision: stop playing their game and create a new one entirely.
